In 1904, George Mitchell moved into the village of Letham from an outlying farm and founded what is now one of the longest established food firms in Scotland . By means of horse and cart he began by collecting hens, rabbits and farm produce and selling them door to door locally.

In 1910 George expanded his business by opening a shop in Dundee 's Craig Street Market at a rent of sixpence per day.

Following George's death in 1923 the business was carried on by George's son Joe. In 1925 the horse and cart was replaced by Mitchells first motor vehicle which quickly became a familiar site around Angus county.

Throughout the 1930s and the War years the business progressed into venison production procuring red deer carcasses from the sporting estates and soon became the first firm to export venison to European markets.

Joe’s son Gordon joined the business in 1952 and this Father and son team built Mitchells into Scotland’s leading supplier of poultry and game products to the wholesale and catering trade nationwide.

Today, 4 generations later the firm is still wholly privately owned by Directors Joseph, Steve and Mike Mitchell and employ around 300 people.
Under their steward ship the company has grown threefold since 1998 and entered the convenience food market with their acquisition of Challenger foods in Sunderland*. Combined, both firms turnover around £40m with an output in excess of 25 000 tonnes of chicken meat annually.
